Over the past few years, November has come to mean one thing…JOB HUNTING, and all the stress and exhilaration it brings. I guess it’s no surprise then that I’ve been seeking out non-stop comfort food lately! It’s nice to still be able to find new vegan-friendly treats, since so many places I’d depended on for grub are closing down (basically every single Loving Hut, it seems…) Anyhoo, since it is still autumn, have some fall foliage (which is fading fast around here, boohoo!)
During my very first trip to Seoul, even before I became vegan, I happened upon a quaint and cozy cafe in Hongdae which dished up some awesome soy chai lattes and vegan brownies. However, on my subsequent trip I was disheartened to find that this shabby chic cafe had completely disappeared without a trace. Now, nearly three years later, I’m pleased to report that Cook and Book has reopened in a smaller, yet every bit as cozy, location in Hapjeong!
I was recently asked by one of my fave Seoul-centered blogs, My Seoul Searching, to contribute a post about my top vegan eats in Seoul, which I was happy to do! You can check it out here. Anyhow, since writing up my top five recommendations, one of them has closed down, and the quality of another one has slipped. Total bummer! I’d been regularly visiting Mimi & Kelly’s to try and work my way through their whole menu when they suddenly announced that they’d be closing. I didn’t want to waste the photos I’d taken of their awesome vegan comfort food, though, so I’m posting them regardless. Anyway, hopefully they’ll be able to reopen in a new location soon!
While it seems like more and more vegan restaurants in Seoul are shutting down (Loving Hut Thien Dang, Achasan Loving Hut, Garobee, New Start Buffet, and Mimi & Kelly’s have all disappeared within the past couple of years,) Tokyo’s vegan and healthy-eating scene seems to be growing! When I was scoping out HappyCow prior to our Tokyo trip, I was so surprised by the amount of new restaurants and cafes which had popped up within the past year. That’s gotta be a good sign for sure! First things first, though: a trip to my all-time favorite veg-friendly hang-out, Pure Cafe in Aoyama! ♡
It feels like we were in Tokyo ages ago, even though it was only a couple of weeks ago. Summer Break, come back!

Fall is my favorite season, but I adore Spring in Seoul, for one pink and white reason alone…

I can’t believe how often we eat out nowadays! It’s nice cuz there are so many sweet spots for vegan food in Seoul, but it’s not really helping my efforts to save money… I guess that was the one pro about living in Ulsan: we ate in just about every day, and I was definitely cooking a lot more…like, A LOT more. Oh well.
Last weekend, we attended our first Vegan Flea Market, hosted by VOTU (Vegan Community) and held in the cute vegan cafe Mimi & Kelly’s in Insadong!
Well, I realize I totally missed out on putting up a Christmas post, and now it feels like it’s way too late to even shout “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” without looking like a big ol’ weirdo, but life’s been busy! Our hagwon director surprised us with the ever-so-thoughtful Christmas gift of telling us he’d secretly sold his school and was terminating our contracts early (on Christmas-frickin’-Eve!!), so Christmas was spent frantically sending out CVs and feeling totally stressed out and screwed over. Anyway, we’d booked a holiday to Hong Kong earlier in the year, and we did contemplate cancelling it after we’d received this bad news, but I insisted that I NEEDED a vacation, so we went ahead with it anyway (and I’m super happy we did cuz it rocked!)
First things first: DA FOOOOOD! We were shocked by the quantity and quality of vegan food in Hong Kong. I mean, Korea loves its meat, but in Hong Kong we saw all sorts of stomach-churning sights (whole ducks, chickens, and pigs hanging in windows, old ladies selling chicken feet on the street, boxes of shark fins, lizards impaled on sticks, deer fetuses…I mean, I can keep going on if you’d like me to, but I would kinda rather stop!) So, we basically weren’t really expecting to have much luck in finding cruelty-free cuisine, BUT WE WERE SO WRONG!
I’ve mentioned Cafe Sukara in multiple posts on this blog, and even though I’ve enjoyed their scrumptious meals, drinks, and desserts on countless occasions, I don’t think I’ve ever actually done a review with directions and menu photos. So, here we go!
October’s a special month for me this year, and not just because Halloween falls on a Friday (though that is pretty darn awesome.) This month marks my one year vegan-niversary (is that a thing?!), which seems totally crazy to me right now; time has just flown past! After we returned to Korea from a long weekend in Osaka last October, I had one last KFC (don’t judge meee~), and have been eating animal-free ever since then! Becoming vegan has definitely made me feel a lot healthier. I know I’m totally jinxing myself, but I actually can’t remember the last time I was sick…which is pretty darn impressive for someone who works with snotty kids all day! Anyway, my body just feels good, and I feel way happier, too; no more guilt of saying how much I love animals while chomping into a bacon sandwich…
Anyway! Last week, we had a three-day weekend, so we gorged on all our favorite goodies and took a stroll through sunny Seoul Forest (with Duggie, of course!)
